Daakman Barrek was born to highly-educated professors on the academic world of Mrlsst. His mother, a famed geneticist, discovered his Force potential through a blood screening of her own, and it was she who contacted the Jedi Council with hopes that her son would find greatness serving the Republic. Barrek indeed proved powerful in the Force, and quickly ascended the ranks of the Jedi Order, achieving the title of Master in his mid-30s after successfully training his first Padawan.

At the outbreak of the Clone Wars, Barrek and his second Padawan, Sha'a Gi, were disrupting pirate activity in the Outer Rim. Barrek was saddened to recieve word that his first Padawan died at Geonosis, and he commited himself fully to the war effort. He gladly accepted the rank of General in the new military.

Barrek and young Gi gathered intelligence uncovering a massive battle droid factory on the Outer Rim world of Hypori. The Jedi Council dispatched an elite Jedi taskforce -- including Council Members Shaak Ti and Ki-Adi-Mundi -- to Hypori. Barrek, having the most experience with the industrial world, was to take command of the Jedi unit and accompanying clone troopers upon arrival.

The Hypori campaign quickly collapsed into disaster. Orbital mines destroyed all of the transport craft, causing them to crash behind enemy lines on Hypori. The factories churned out thousands of battle droids to destroy the survivors of the crash. Many of the clone troopers died in the initial crash, and what few were left were decimated by droid laser fire. The Jedi were trapped -- and the situation worsened.
