Vintage Star Wars toy collectors may have spotted something vaguely familiar in the Y-wing starfighters seen streaking across the Geonosian sky in this week's episode of The Clone Wars, "Landing at Point Rain" -- yup, that red striping is not the first time we've seen the stalwart bomber-fighters shed their traditional gold deco for red.

Back in 1979, Kenner released their Y-wing fighter as part of the second wave of vehicles in their popular die-cast line. Savvy fans probably guessed the red stripes were a mistake -- after all, the X-wings were designated "Red Squadron", and the Y-wings "Gold".
早在1979年，Kenner发售了他们的Y翼战斗机，作为他们知名的印模压铸系列载具第二波中的一个。有见识的影迷也许会猜测，这种红色条纹是个错误——毕竟，设定里X翼才是“红色中队”，而Y翼是“金色”。

It turns out the Y-wings were released red in 1979 because Kenner designers had based their color scheme on the original Y-wing colors, depicted in the early ILM model photos below. See, Y-wings were originally classified as "Red" squadron in the A New Hope script, while the X-wings were, believe it or not, "Blue" squadron.
而1979年Y翼在最终发售时之所以是红色，是因为Kenner的设计者们以Y翼最初的颜色为基础确立了他们的颜色体系，如下方早期ILM的模型照片所描绘的。瞧，Y翼最初在《新希望》的剧本中是被划为“红色”中队的，而X翼，信不信由你，是“蓝色”中队。

Why the change from blue and red to red and gold? Simple -- the special effects technology of the day did not allow for the color blue to be used on models or objects that required them to be inserted onto a separate background -- star-filled space or the Death Star trench, in this case. Because of this limitation, the blue stripes for the X-wings were changed to red, and the red Y-wings became gold.
那为什么把蓝色和红色改成了红色和金色？很简单：那个时候的特效技术有局限性，需要安插到一个单独的背景前——比如此片中繁星点点的太空，或是死星壕沟——的模型或物体，是不能上蓝色的。为此，X翼的蓝色条纹给改成了红色，而红色的Y翼则变成了金色。

Probably worked out for the best in the end -- "Cut the chatter Blue Two" just doesn't carry the same edge, does it?

Star Wars Twitter follower Adam16bit reminds us that Galoob released a red-striped Y-wing as part of their Action Fleet series, and Hasbro also gave Toys "R" Us a red Y-wing as an exclusive a few years ago. Good catch!
